Year 4 enjoyed a science lesson in Forest School today. We used classification keys to identify living things. We had to answer the questions carefully to make sure that we correctly identified the creature. We found a variety of different creatures and had a lot of fun developing our scientific skills.

We look forward to welcoming you, to our open event, on Monday 25th November 2025.

Year 2 have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to attend STEM Club! They had to use their observation, prediction and pattern seeking skills for a range of different STEM activities and they enjoyed using specialist science equipment such as a pipette. We realised that we had to use a range of STEM skills in order to be successful!

For our wheelbarrow this year we have followed the suggested theme of 'D is for.' Our D is for Diversity. Year One planted a variety of seeds to make a wild flower meadow. Just like our community of people, the plants are all different but together they bring beauty to the world. The plants will all bloom at different times so we hope that the wheelbarrow will continue to develop over the next few weeks of term.

On Tuesday 21st May, Year 6 went to Lincoln Cathedral to participate in the Church Schools Festival. We had a tour of the cathedral and took part in a singing workshop. We also explored the discovery centre, where we completed a quiz about the cathedral artefacts and produced some artwork for display. Our day ended with a special worship.  

This half term, Year One have enjoyed accessing the Forest School and other outdoor areas as part of their science lessons. They have used their science skills to make close observations of plants and animals, planted seeds and observed their growth over time and identified different types of plants and animals using identification charts. The children learnt about what plants need to grow and about the different parts of a plant. They have also created this year's wheelbarrow which will be revealed soon.

Year 1 have had so much fun at STEM Club! They had to use their prediction skills for a range of different STEM activities. One of the activities was to see how many cotton wool balls would fit into a cup of water that was full to the very top without spilling any water! The children were surprised with their findings because they had not considered that the cotton wool balls would keep absorbing the water.

They also had to use a steady hand when using a pipette. The mission this time was to see how many drops they could balance on the top of a 1p coin. The children enjoyed using their STEM skills in order to be successful!

As part of Year 4's computing learning, they had a computer technician, Connor, come into school to talk about his job. Connor spoke about the what he does for his job and how he decided that he wanted to work with technology. The children were also able to ask Connor their own questions relating to his job and learned lots! They thoroughly enjoyed this session. 

We have celebrated British Science Week 2024. The theme this year was time. Each year group has completed different investigations linking to this year’s theme and the children have been very excited to discover new things! Some of the activities have been taking part in a potato competition to grow the most potatoes, observing how different species have adapted over time, researching how dinosaurs became extinct and looking for patterns between leg length and speed. Science Week is an event we celebrate every year and we always really enjoy it!

The children in Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 had a brilliant opportunity to listen to three key speakers about their different jobs linking to aviation. There was a pilot, a robotics engineer and mechanical engineer. The children enjoyed learning about the different jobs and were able to ask their own questions. It was a great session and the children were very engaged! They particularly enjoyed finding out about how to get into the different types of jobs and hearing about apprenticeships that could be on offer to them in the future

Year 6 have looked at fossils to investigate the evolution of horse’s hooves over 35 million years. These fossils helped them to understand how horses adapted over time to live in different environments.

They also had the opportunity to attend an online question and answer session where geologists talked to them about evolution and fossils.

Year 5 had a fabulous visit to the Hull and East Riding Archaeological museum.  They were greeted by an Anglo Saxon in the morning and enjoyed exploring a range of artefacts.  Evelyn and Ashdon found out what it was like to wear Anglo Saxon clothes and then all the children designed and made their own Anglo Saxon brooch

Year 5 had a visit from Mr Kerins who works for the Humber Gateway Offshore Wind Farm. Mr Kerins explained to the class what his job entailed and how wonderful it was to work on the wind turbines. He gave the children an insight into the different jobs available and his visit inspired many children to think about their future careers. One member of the class said, “It has changed the way I think about my career. He made me think it was a good job and I would like to work there.”

Year 4 had a fantastic session with Mr Noble who is a scientist that works at Hull University! This session helped them with their learning on their topic living things and their habitats! They found out so many interesting facts about freshwater fish, their habitats and Mr Noble even showed them how to tell the age of fish using their scales! They also enjoyed discovering that Mr Noble's laboratory is usually outside in rivers and lakes! The children had the opportunity to ask Mr Noble lots of questions about his job and many of the children said they are now feeling inspired to become a scientist themselves when they are older! Thank you Mr Noble for coming to visit Year 4!

Thank you to the children in Year 2 for leading a super worship about forgiving people as God has forgiven us. They had planned the worship  themselves and spoke with confidence. Well done Year 2.

Thank you to everybody who supported our Children in Need handful of coins event, which was planned by our school council. The children enjoyed wearing their own clothes and taking part in some Joe Wicks activities.

Everybody had a great time taking part in the Rugby Festival. There were new skills to learn and practise and lots of games to play. Well done everybody!

Thank you to everybody in our community who took part in our Colour Run event. The sun was shining and everybody had lots of fun!

For the Archbishop Award project this year, the children chose to invite a group of people from the community into school for tea and cakes! The children created their own invites, made a homemade 'act of kindness flower' for their guests to keep, served tea and cakes and also were able to talk about their project! The children loved been able to share all the hard work they have put into their Archbishop Award with their visitors. All the children were a credit to our school for the whole afternoon and over the course of the whole award! Well done Year 4 on completing your Young Leaders Award!

Today was election day. Children had written application letters for leadership positions within school and eight children were shortlisted. These eight candidates demonstrated courage and determination when they stood up in front of the whole school and read out their letters. Well done to all the applicants!

All members of the school were then able to cast their votes in polling booths, just like in local and national elections. The outcome of the voting will be announced soon!

The children in Years 5 and 6 put on a fantastic performance of Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. The children worked so hard to learn their lines, actions, dances and songs, it was truly an amazing performance. The cast were so proud of themselves and their faces were lit up with enjoyment. 

Thank you to the audience for their generous donations to our chosen charity, EdUKAid. The amount of money raised  is enough to  pay for maize to feed a class for a year and also to fund a pre-primary education for up to 100 children for a year. 

What a fantastic time was had by the whole school at our Sports Day event. The children were amazing and displayed perseverance and resilence throughout all the events. Thank you for all our special visitors that attended, it was lovely to see so many of you. 

A fantastic time was had by all our Year 6 children who took part in the Caythorpe Residental visit. There were so many activities to tey and the children were determined to be successful at them. Many happy memories were made that will last a lifetime. A big thank you to all the staff who volunteered to take part.

This term, it was time for the Year 5 class to have the opportunity to attend the STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) club. 

The children had a project where they had to create a device that could transport eggs safely. The children thoroughly enjoyed their mission and they had so many wonderful ideas! We discussed the different skills that the children needed to complete the mission and how they linked to the four areas of STEM. The children were so excited in the last session when they were able to test what they had made. We had a lot of success!

On Thursday, we had a visit from Catherine who is the Deputy Dock Master at Grimsby and Immingham. She spent the afternoon talking to the Year 6 children about her role and other careers that are related to working at different ports. The children found out lots of information and even had a challenge about making their own ship.

' I learnt that one single transportation ship can carry up to 700 cars and people drive them down a ramp to get them off the ship. I also learnt that there are lots of different jobs for different things and it inspired me to learn more about mechanics as well as wind turbines.'

' I learnt that when I am older, I could get a job that isn't far away and I could have the opportunity to travel around the world or drive a real boat. Also, I could design my very own ship'

After the success of our STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) clubs in the Autumn and Spring Term, we have continued with our club but this time, it has been the Year 1 and Year 2 children who have had the opportunity to take part.

Our sessions have included the children building the tallest towers, designing a pair of glasses which had to fit the design brief, creating a sequence of movements to occur after only one original movement and trying to insulate an ice cube so that it does not melt. Throughout all of the sessions, we spoke about the science and maths skills that we were using to complete the different tasks. We also had lots of fun

Year 4 were very lucky to have a chef from Chartwells come in to  work with us as part of our D&T  learning! We worked with Gavin to innovate a base recipe for cookies. We were given the option of adding a variety of ingredients including chocolate chunks, dried fruit, ginger and cinnamon to improve the cookie. All the children showcased some great skills when mixing the ingredients and decorating their cookies! Most of all, we enjoyed taste testing our finished products!

Year 5 had an exciting trip to Hymers College in Hull to take part in the Brownlee Triathlon. It is a non-competitive event which is designed to be fun and inclusive. The event gave the Year 5 children the opportunity to try the disciplines of triathlon (swimming, cycling and running). The children thoroughly enjoyed the whole event and they made us very proud!

To celebrate the Coronation of King Charles, we had the opportunity to write letters to place in a time capsule. We wrote about what our lives are like now and hope that at some point in the future, children of this school will uncover the capsule .We had great fun burying our time capsule in the Peace Garden.

 We celebrated the King's Coronation with a whole school picnic which was delicious,  making crowns and receiving a special mug. We all had a lovely day and will remember it in years to come.

Year 4 took part in a virtual History visit with the British Museum which linked with our learning on the ancient Egyptians. We worked with a historian, who works for the British Museum, and were given the the exciting role of Myth-Busters! We had to look at various myths linked to the ancient Egyptians and we had to use the clues and our own knowledge to help us discover if they were true or not. I was so impressed with all the knowledge the children were able to share with the historian from our History lessons on the ancient Egyptians! Well done Year 4 - you were all super historians!

At the beginning of the summer term, Year 3 went to Baysgarth School to participate in a range of sporting activities organised by Get Ahead. They did football, archery, 'Get Glowing', 'Speed of Light' and a silent disco. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all of the children.

Year 3 and 4 put on an amazing showcase for their grown-ups to end the Spring Term. The children showcased a variety of things we have done across the term. Both classes performed their poems from English, shared what they have done in Music and demonstrated some great acting skills when performing 'The Story of the Good Samaritan'. To finish the showcase, both classes sang 'This is Us' to celebrate that everyone is amazing just they way they are! What a fantastic way to end the term - you were all superstars! 

An amazing total of £105 was raised from donations at the end of the showcase. This has been donated to EdUKaid to help support our partner school in Mitengo. Many thanks to all those who gave so generously!

Thank you to everyone who was able to join us this afternoon for our Vision afternoon. We really enjoyed sharing with you our work about what our school vision means to us.

Year 5 celebrated British Science Week 2023 by also having a visitor in school! They were very lucky to have Mr Kerins talk about his career working on the wind farm near Cleethorpes! The children were very engaged in the session and enjoyed asking questions as well as watching videos about what his job entails. Mr Kerins showed the children the equipment they use and have to wear on the job and he was exceptionally kind by bringing some gifts for the children to take home. It was wonderful to see how many hands went up when the children were asked if they were now inspired to follow a similar career path. Thank you Mr Kerins for coming to see us and supporting us with promoting STEM careers!

Years 5 and 6 had an amazing time at the Young Voices concert in Sheffield. After learning and practising the songs over the last few weeks, they became part of the largest children's choir in the world and performed in a concert that they will never forget. The children made us proud as they sung their hearts out alongside professionals including Heather Small and Anna Phoebe. Many parents were able to be in the audience for the concert and one described it as a 'once in a lifetime opportunity' for her child. What a fantastic night!

We are delighted that a range of our children's art is on display at '20-21 Visual Arts Centre' in Scunthorpe. The work will be on display for another five weeks and the art gallery is free to attend. The gallery staff were very impressed with the artwork and said that it was of a very high standard. Well done to all the children whose art was chosen!

Year One have been enjoying a weekly virtual visit from a farmer through the Farmer Time programme which is designed to 'engage and educate young people about, not only the journey from farm to fork, but also the everchanging, diverse agricultural industry.'

The children have been so excited about the visits which have challeneged stereotypical views of jobs and inspired the children by introducing them to a wider view of the world.  They have been learning lots of new things including that pigs can be black and that not all cows provide milk and have even written letters to the farmer as part of the English lessons. 

This year, the staff held a collection for EdUKaid, instead of sending Christmas cards to each other. The money raised purchased gifts for children in our partner school Mitengo in Tanzania. Thank you to Andy Broom's Christmas Trees for kindly donating a beautiful tree. The children were wide eyed with excitement when they walked into the hall and saw it. It has now been regifted to a local care home for the residents and staff to enjoy.

To mark Road Safety Week, we had a visit from a representative of Humberside police who spoke to us about Road Safety. We were reminded about the three key parts of the green cross code - stop, look and listen. We also learnt about other safety aspects such as wearing reflective clothing when it is dark, taking headphones off when crossing the road and not using our phones whilst crossing the road.

We then talked about the importance of wearing seatbelts and saw a demonstration of what happened to 'The Silly Family' when they didn’t wear their seatbelts in their model car. We all agreed that wearing seatbelts is important even on a short journey or at low speeds. This keeps everyone in the car safe and prevents serious injury.

Finally, we discussed how important it is to wear a helmet when we are riding our bikes or scooters. Mr Spivey showed us why this is important using eggs to demonstrate how wearing a helmet protects our brain.

Our beginners' recorder club has resumed and the children are enjoying learning to play a new instrument and to read music. They are already sounding fabulous when they play their songs and their enthusiasm is a pleasure to see.

The foodbank donations which we collected for our Harvest Worship have been weighed and the grand total came to 146.6kg. This is an incredible achievement and we are very grateful to everyone who donated. 

Revd Kathy, who collected the donations on behalf of the foodbank, asked us to pass on this message. 'Please thank everyone at John Harrison for their generosity, especially at this time when everyone is feeling the pinch. Your kindness will mean that we can continue to help people in need this winter.'

We welcomed special visitors from the Humber Bridge in worship today. They presented two of our children with certificates for being runners up in the Poetry and Short Story Competition. The children also recieved copies of the book which their work has been published in. Congratulations to both of them. We are very proud of their achievement. A copy of the book has also been presented to school and will be signed by the children before being placed in the library for all to enjoy.

Celebrating success, joy and perseverence together as one!

It is with great sadness that we join the country in mourning the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The pupils have been supported in school with a special worship as well as discussion and activities in class. This morning, Reverend Liz joined us to lay flowers at our jubilee tree in the Peace Garden and to say a prayer in memory of the queen. Children are welcome to bring their own flowers into school and lay them here whilst having a moment of quiet reflection. We also have a book of condolonce open in the foyer of school for the use of any members of the community who wish to pay their respects to the queen.

May she rest in peace and may God bring strength and comfort to her family at this sad time.

The Year Six residential visit to Caythorpe Court (PGL) was a big success. It is always a fabulous way to end the children's time at our school. Friendships were strengthened, new ones were made and the children pushed themselves to achieve things they never thought was possible to become the best that they can be.

A big thank you to all the staff who gave up their time to make this visit possible.

Open the Book visited today to share the story of Pentecost with Reception and Key Stage One. The children loved seeing the story being acted out. We are grateful to Deacon Helen and her team for their visit.

Deacon Helen visited today to lead our Ascension worship. Whilst she was here, she collected art completed by Year Six to show their favourite worship songs. These will be displayed as part of an exhibition with work from other schools in the Methodist Churches of Barrow and Goxhill during the Better Barrow and Goxhill Open Garden weekends. We can't wait to see them there!

School Council had a special visitor at their last meeting. Ann Boulton, who is clerk to Barrow Upon Humber Parish Council, came to explain what the Parish Council is and how it works. The children learnt all about what the Parish Council does and realised that there were lots of similarities with their role in school, including the use of voting. They had the chance to ask lots of questions and were excited to realise that many of the places they like to visit in the village are looked after by the Parish Council. Finally, the School Council pledged to collect some pupil voice regarding the playground equipment at the playing fields and to send that back to the Parish Council. They are looking forward to completing this job.

Years Five and Six enjoyed attending the virtual book launch of Sophie Anderson's new book, 'The Theif Who Sang Storms.' Here are some of the fairy tale worlds that they created during the event.

School council have been collecting litter in our local area. They requested the opportunity because they have chosen the environment as their main focus this year.

Charlotte said, "We wanted to go litter picking so that we could help the environment and help our village to be tidy."

Years 4, 3 and 2 are enjoying a fencing experience in their P.E. lessons. It takes a lot of perseverance to learn a new skill but they are having a lot of fun.

The whole school enjoyed celebrating Twosday on 22.2.22. This one-in-a-life-time date was marked by different mathematical activities in every class. Whether it was counting in twos, finding other examples of two in their environment or completing a Twosday Puzzle, all the children had lots of fun. 

Here is the winning tower in Year Six's 'Tumbler Towers' competition. The children were given 22 tumblers to make into the tallest tower. They used their knowledge of structures from D.T. and then had to use their mathematical skills to calculate how tall their tower was. It was a fabulous STEM activity.

At the beginning of a new term, the children experience outdoor and adventurous activities. Here are Year Six completing a QR code orienteering activity.

We are delighted to be able to share with you these photographs from our partner school Mitengo in Tanzania. They show the materials which were purchased with the money raised from our silent disco event last year. Local community volunteers used the materials to create a new outdoor learning space. With more than 100 children in most classes, the shelter provides much needed additional teaching space for children at Mitengo – particularly those children who have special educational needs. You can see in the photographs how excited the children are about the shelter.

The new headteacher at the school, Mr Fidelis Kambanga sent us this message: “Thank you to all the wonderful families at John Harrison School in UK – you have made education better for our children when we were desperately needed help. I pray you will be with us always.”

Our Year Six children were very happy to be able to take part in the Lincoln Virtual Church School Festival. Over two days, they completed a range of tasks linked to the theme of hope. The children particularly enjoyed dancing to the festival song and making their own 'hope quote' animations in small groups. They also found examples of hope in the news and used these to create a piece of artwork. Their final task was sharing their hopes for the future which they presented in closed flowers which opened when they were placed in water. Many thanks to the Diocese of Lincoln Board of Education for providing the children with the opportunity to explore such an important value.

Our digital leads have trialled a Google Internet Legends Family Kit which contains this amazing 3D trophy. The trophy can be completed by following the QR code to access quiz questions and activities about online safety. The digital leads said that the kits were lots of fun and helped them to learn lots about how to stay safe online.

The rest of the children in Key Stage 2 will be taking their own kit home to complete soon. We hope that families find it an enjoyable and useful way to discuss online safety at home.

Year Six have completed their Bikeability course. They were extrememly lucky with the weather and we saw superb improvement in all the children's understanding of how to stay safe when cycling. 

Year Four have been on a walk around the village to learn more about their local community for the Archbishop of York Youth Trust's Young Leaders Award. The award is helping them to understand that they have the power to make a difference and they will choose a community project to complete in the next few weeks.

Year Five have taken part in the first virtual Baysgarth Maths Challenge Day. The children were put into teams and had a range of challenges to complete throughout the day. We can not put into words how impressed we were with the children! They were so enthusiastic, showed impressive communication and leadership skills and showed resilience under a strict time frame! Some of the challenges were very hard but one team managed to answer them all. Here you can see one of the successful marble runs that the children had to create, aiming to achieve the longest amount of time for the marble to go from top to bottom! 

Overall, we had a day filled with a lot of learning, a lot of fun and a lot of laughs!

At the end of term, all of our children received a certificate and badge to celebrate their hard work and achievements. 

The Year Six pods have renovated the school badge located near the staff car park. They have done a super job and we will remember them every time we look at it. Thank you to Mr Skipworth and Mrs McCafferty and her family who helped the children to complete the project.

Pupils, in Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 also sang and signed Old McDonald, Little Peter Rabbit and Baby Shark!
